About the Workshop:
Open Information Extraction (Open IE) attempts to extract (subject, relation, object) tuples from a sentence in an ontology-independent manner, i.e., all arguments and relations are phrases extracted from the original text. These semi-structured representations are useful for constructing knowledge bases without human supervision and improving question answering systems. Open IE has a 15 year old history in the field of NLP with a wide variety of techniques ranging from rule-based systems to machine learning systems, both non-neural, and recently neural. In this tutorial, we describe Open IE’s philosophy, salient techniques, applications, latest trends and challenges that lie ahead.

Parallel Workshop 3 on Blockchain - "Rebuilding the Web of Trust: Decentralized Identifiers, Verifiable Credentials, and all that" by Andreas Freund, PhD (Limited Seats) 120 Minutes
Abstract- Learn how W3C decentralized identifiers (DIDs) and W3C verifiable credentials (VCs) can be foundational building blocks to rebuild the web of trust and how to use them; returning agency to everyone's identity. The workshop will give a brief introduction to the topics of decentralized identifiers and verifiable credentials and how they can and are used in real life. Following this introduction, we will deep dive into the W3C DID and VC standards, and then do a hands-on exercise building our own VCs and testing them using the W3C Traceability Vocabulary Standards and Testsuite. The workshop concludes with a brief walkthrough of the Sidetree standard for DIDs, combined with a brief demonstration and exercise of the Sidetree DID method, Ion, which is built on top of the Bitcoin blockchain.

Abstract:
Zero knowledge proofs (ZKPs) are a key technical component to the Baseline Protocol and Baseledger. ZKPs allow one to exchange information to another without actually revealing it. Zero knowledge proofs are a key technical component to the execution of the Baseline Protocol, as well as Baseledger, the synchronization network compliant with the Baseline Protocol.

The Baseline Protocol is a process standard for using blockchain or distributed ledger technology as a common frame of reference between two or more disparate systems. Enforcing real time data-reciprocity between ERPs, databases or state machines, or amongst other distributed technologies allows participants to verify counterparty data integrity and consistency throughout any business process, without exposing any sensitive information. It is particularly promising as a way to reduce capital expense and other overheads while increasing operational integrity when automating business processes across multiple companies. This leads to a reduction in organizational risk and is an effective way to turn isolated data islands into advanced, shared networks. Baseledger is the first public network designed for storing and managing baseline proofs. Baseledger complies with the Baseline Protocol to ensure that no data is moved from companies' system of record onto any kind of blockchain, and proofs cannot be used by an observer to learn anything about companies' confidential information, relationships or business activities. The network is secure, always-on and anchored to the Ethereum blockchain using a zero-knowledge rollups to prevent tampering with the proofs.

The proofs created in synchronized, baselined processes become all new use cases for smart contracts and NFTs. It has become increasingly clear how baselined business processes will yield high-fidelity outputs such as verifiable invoices. The opportunities to improve modern treasury operations and optimize cash management using these high-fidelity, baselined instruments will incentive large organizations to participate in the enterprise DeFi ecosystem.

As investments in AI/ML grow, it has become important to build end-user trust in machine learning
models. AI technology suffers from what is called a “black box” problem. Stakeholders are often reluctant
to trust machine learning projects because they don’t understand what they do. It’s hard for
decision-makers to relinquish control to a seemingly mysterious machine learning model, especially when
it’s responsible for crucial decisions. This is more pronounced in the case of deep learning and artificial
neural network approaches, which contain many hidden layers that learn through pattern recognition.
To ensure the success of AI/ML programs and drive adoption, it has therefore become important to
enhance transparency with human-interpretable explanations of machine learning models, and to have
the ability to ensure that models are kept current, with predictions that are in line with ground truths.
In this workshop, we shall look at some of these concepts, associated tools and frameworks, and
understand them with the help of some demonstrations. You shall be able to follow along for some of the
demonstrations with Google Developers Codelabs, or try them later.
